About us

Why One Day at a Time and NICU & You exists

One Day at a Time was founded by Belle Stevenson, a neonatal nurse whose experience at Altnagelvin Hospital revealed the profound emotional challenges parents face while their babies receive care in the NICU. Following her receipt of the Royal College of Nursing Gabrielle Durkan Award, Belle created resources focused specifically on supporting parents’ mental health during this critical time, including her book written from the perspective of NICU babies themselves.

What began as a compassionate initiative to support local families has grown into an international resource reaching NICUs across Northern Ireland, Ireland, the United States, New Zealand, and beyond. Through partnerships with healthcare providers and perinatal mental health services, we’re committed to breaking the stigma surrounding parental mental health and providing practical support that acknowledges both the medical journey of the child and the emotional journey of the family.

Hospital wards can be a place of healing, but also a place that creates distress, concern and fear of the unknown. What many of us need at that time is reassurance, reassurance for the now and reassurance about what the future holds. This book is such a valuable resource for mums or dads who’s baby is unwell, bringing hope and comfort. Written with nursing experience and compassion, Belle has created a beautifully written and illustrated book that families can use and benefit from greatly. This simple yet profoundly heartening book should be available to everyone who finds themselves in that ward confronting the unknown.

Why NICU&U

Supporting your journey, one day at a time

The NICU journey can be overwhelming for parents. NICU&U was created by Belle Stevenson, a neonatal nurse who recognized that while babies receive excellent medical care, parents often need additional support for their mental health and wellbeing during this challenging time. Our resources help families navigate the NICU experience with compassion, understanding, and practical guidance.

Parental Wellbeing

Your mental health matters. Research consistently shows that parental wellbeing directly impacts infant development. We provide resources, community support, and professional guidance to help you care for yourself while your baby receives the medical care they need.

Family Connection

NICU&U helps you maintain and strengthen your connection with your baby despite the challenges of the NICU environment. Our book "One Day at a Time," written from your baby's perspective, offers reassurance and comfort during this difficult period.

Community Support

Connect with other NICU parents who understand your experience. Our community provides a safe space to share concerns, celebrate milestones, and find encouragement from others who have walked this path before you.

On Going Resources

The journey doesn't end when you leave the hospital. NICU&U provides continued guidance and resources for families transitioning home and navigating the unique challenges that may follow a NICU stay.

What parent say
I can speak about this beautifully created book from 2 perspectives one being a neonatal nurse myself & secondly from being a mammy of a preterm infant who spend 5 weeks in neonatal myself with my little son. When a baby is admitted to the neonatal unit it can often be a very frightening time in a new parents life. The environment can be quite daunting with lots of strange noises, alarms and beeping sounds. One day at a time illustrates what a parent can expect when their baby is admitted to the Neonatal Unit, it's the perfect guide for a new parent on the neonatal journey. As a neonatal nurse myself I feel these books would greatly benefit parents and Its written in a very gentle & calming manner which is perfect for helping to alleviate & reduce stress levels in new parents. From a parental point of view myself I feel the book is very soothing & provides a degree of relief to parents knowing that their baby is going to be in a safe place being looked after by the highly qualified neonatal nurses. The book also normalises feelings of parents aswell which is lovely as often parents go through a whirlwind of emotions during this time. The actual title is what I myself say to parents on a regular basis to take "one day at a time" when providing reasurrance to them. The pictures are very accurate yet they have been designed in such a beautiful and gentle way. Thank you Belle for all your hard work you put in to create & design these amazing books, I wish you every success in the promotion & distribution of them to neonatal units, they are fabulous 💖 xx
